Ferry Sloops Announces 2018 Music & Lecture Series

The Ferry Sloops "2018 Music & Lecture Series" will feature local musicians and guest speakers at their monthly meetings. The popular annual series is hosted by Shattemuc Yacht Club in Ossining and begins at 7:30pm. Come with a dish to share at 6:30pm and enjoy a potluck dinner. Admission is FREE and open to the public.

On the Ossining Waterfront: A Tangled Tale of Epic Change, Human Tragedy and Real Estate
Presented by Ossining Village Historian, Dana White
The Ossining waterfront has a history unique in the annals of the Hudson River. This presentation covers centuries of change, from the first inhabitants to the arrival of the state prison. Using dozens of vintage photographs, it tells the story of the interaction of villagers with the river, including shipbuilding, fishing and boat clubs, as well as the waterfront’s more-recent transformation from gritty industrial landscape to lifestyle destination.

Sparta Dock: Copper Mining & Shad Fishing
Presented by local historian, Scott Craven
Learn about the historical importance of copper mining and shad fishing at Sparta Dock. Just north of the Scarborough train station, there were 5 entrances to mines, as well as a 500 ft. shaft that still exists today and a working commercial fishery that operated into the 1980’s.
