Sail Training

“ready about”… “hard a’ lee”…

Each year, Ferry Sloops offers Basic Sail Training in the context of sailing our boat "Whimbrel" on the Hudson River.

Instruction is offered to all active (full membership level) members. It begins in the classroom with basic sailing theory (wind, points-of-sail, parts of boats, terminology), boating safety, rules-of-the-road (navigation lights, poor visibility), anchoring and mooring, “man overboard”, safety gear, emergency conditions, introduction to charts, and knot tying.

The course is based on the U.S. Sailing Keelboat Course.

Upon completion of this classroom course, participants are invited to continue hands-on sail training aboard “Whimbrel”, our 22’ sloop-rigged Catboat, which is docked at Shattemuc Yacht Club in Ossining every summer.

The basic sailing course is available to active full members at NO cost. (Suggested prerequisite: A Boating Safety Course as offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or similar)

Our instructors all have extensive sailing experience, are CPR and First Aid certified and captains of Whimbrel.
